The first step is a medical inquiry into the potential causes for overdeveloped breast tissue. If medical interventions cannot resolve the issue, male breast reduction usually becomes the next best option. Male breast reduction can safely remove excess fat, glandular tissue and loose skin on the breast area and restore the chest to a normal contour. It’s an outpatient procedure that can be performed under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. To contour the chest, we use liposuction, excision (surgical removal of tissue), or a combination of both.
Ideal Male Breast Reduction Candidates

This surgery can also be beneficial for men who have excess sagging skin on their chest following significant weight loss. It is an ideal option for men seeking to achieve a flatter chest with a more masculine shape.
You may undergo male breast reduction surgery if you do not take anabolic steroids, drink alcohol, or smoke cigarettes or marijuana for a period of time prior to and immediately following surgery. These activities have been linked to the development of gynecomastia, and so you will need to try avoiding them before considering a surgical solution.
The best candidates for gynecomastia surgery are healthy men who have reasonable expectations regarding the outcome of the treatment.
Male Breast Reduction Preparation
In order to determine whether you are healthy enough to undergo male breast reduction, Dr. Ronan will perform a full physical examination and order a series of lab tests if indicated.
Prepare questions to ask about the process and be ready to talk about your goals for the operation outcome. It is also important to talk about your medical history and various lifestyle factors.
The Procedure
The male breast reduction technique is often performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis, though it is also possible to perform the procedure using sedation and local anesthesia.
Incisions are created to allow access to the underling tissues. Excess glandular breast tissue can be removed with excision, and excess fat can be addressed using liposuction; often, a combination of the two techniques is used. Excess skin is another potential target for removal.
The male breast reduction treatment will normally take anywhere from one and a half to three hours to complete.
Male Breast Reduction Recovery
Your general health and the extent of your male breast reduction treatment will be the major factors that determine your recovery time. Normal activities can typically be resumed within a week, allowing most patients to return to their regular schedules.
About two weeks after the male breast reduction operation, you can start doing light activities again. Dr. Ronan will advise you not to do anything too strenuous for at least four to six weeks.
Some post-surgical marks from the male reduction surgery are to be expected, but they should fade with time. The incisions are made with the utmost precision so that the patient can have the greatest potential cosmetic outcome.
Results
In most cases, male breast reduction surgery results are permanent. A recurrence of gynecomastia may be brought on by hormone fluctuations, the use of recreational drugs or steroids, or even an increase in body weight.
Though initial results can be seen immediately, it may take anywhere from three to six months before you see the final full results of your gynecomastia surgery. The chest will look flatter and more masculine.
